Description Sunrize Star Anise - a star shaped fruit that is picked before it ripens and then dried. Its aroma is similar to liquerice.
The Sunrize Fact-ory A shortage of star anise is one of the key reasons why there was a worldwide shortage of Tamiflu in 2005. Star anise is grown in four provinces in China and harvested between March and May. The shikimic acid is extracted from the seeds in a ten-stage manufacturing process which takes a year and it is reported that over 90% of production of Star Anise was being used by pharmaceutical firms.
Usage Chinese and vitnamese cuisines, confectionary, meat, poultry, fruit compotes, jams and liqueurs.
Storage Requirements Store in a cool dry place and once opened keep in an airtight container for no more than 6 months.
On the Label Star anise is an aromatic spice originally grown in China. It is a major ingredient in both Chinese Five Spice and Garam Masala.
Usage: To make your own garam masala or five spice, you will need to grind the star anise very finely. Another use is for flavouring Basmati Rice (just throw a couple of stars in when cooking and optionally remove before serving)
